Chompy Chomp Chomp is an entertaining arcade game available for PC, which has taken inspiration from the maps in Pac-Man and has shrunk them to the size of frenetic little arenas where 4 Chompies chase each other down mercilessly. Every Chompy is color-coded and has as a target another Chompy: Player 1 can take down interchangebly the purple, blue, or yellow Chompy. In turn, the player can be chomped down by the Chompy with red circle underneath its feet.
There are various maps on which this battle between Chompies – bots or player controlled because the game supports dual mode – which they are drawn rather well. It would be nice to see slightly bigger maps with more corridors, which would enable more tactical usage of the space rather than sheer speed and quick reactions.
But this might be a little too much to ask for a children’s game like Chompy Chomp Chomp, which is designed to be fun and light to play. On those two it delivers, for the creatures and the maps are designed in a cute way, creating an entertaining atmosphere for a few quick games.
Chompy Chomp Chomp has an arcade mode to put the player’s skills to some real challenge. One has to have quick fingers and to manually switch the Chompy’s targets according to their color or risks to be eaten right there. There is a timer to induce greater pace in this mode and to make things even more frenetic.
In both play modes there are various boosters, which can be collected for more points. In battle mode there are certain weapons and traps to tackle the other Chompies. Arguably the most important collectible in the arcade mode is the clock, which adds up precious seconds to the overall time. Gathering boosts in this mode requires very good and methodical coverage of the levels.
Certainly entertaining for the small ones, Chompy Chomp Chomp requires quick reactions and quick thinking. It definitely improves the motor coordination and instant recognition of colors, as well as patterns because in the arcade mode the baddies move in certain fashion. It runs very smoothly, allowing for relatively long sessions, which can develop very quick and precise fingers, plus spatial orientation.
With its light and entertaining, yet challenging and fun gameplay Chompy Chomp Chomp is a good game for young children.
